Signs My Car’s Transmission Is Going Bad

High-mileage vehicle drivers be warned; your automatic transmission could go bad at around 150,000 to 200,000 miles. Do not worry. United Auto Care can replace your transmission when it needs it. Here are the signs that your automatic transmission is going bad.

Burning Transmission Odors

You may smell burning odors coming from the transmission if it is overheating. This is a sign that the transmission fluid is too low, or that it is old and dirty. Your transmission may also overheat if the internal mechanisms are grinding against each other.

Transmission Fluid Leak

Low transmission fluid can be caused by a transmission fluid leak. Transmission fluid can leak out of the torque converter, the transmission hoses, the seals and gaskets, or the transmission pan. If you see red spots on your garage floor, it could be transmission fluid.

Hesitating or Slipping Gears

Another sign that your automatic transmission is going bad is if it hesitates to shift through the gear cycle or slips out of gear. You will know that the latter has happened because you will lose power and your RPMs will increase substantially.

Shaking or Vibration

Your car, truck, or utility vehicle may also shake or vibrate if the transmission is going bad. The only thing you should feel is the difference in your engine’s RPMs when the transmission shifts gears. Any shaking or vibration is cause for concern.

Strange Transmission Noises

The transmission may also start to make strange noises if it is going bad. For example, you may hear a clunk when you put your vehicle into gear. The transmission may also clunk when it shifts gears or grind or squeal. Another sign of a bad transmission is humming in neutral.

Unresponsive Transmission

If you ignore all of the signs listed above, there will come a time when the transmission is completely unresponsive. In other words, you will not be able to get your automobile to go into drive or reverse. The transmission will also refuse to shift through the gear cycle.

Check Engine Warning

All of these symptoms of a bad transmission may be accompanied by a check engine warning light on the dashboard. This light covers many different problems with your automobile including problems with the transmission.

Call United Auto Care in Flowery Branch, GA, today if you are having any of the problems listed above. We will inspect your automatic transmission and recommends the proper course of action to repair the problem. This may include rebuilding or replacing the transmission.
