How to Maintain Your Car Battery

The average car battery lasts between 3 and 5 years. Of course, this lifespan can be affected by extreme weather conditions, how frequently you drive, and how well you care for your battery. With a few easy steps, you can prolong the life of your car battery and save yourself money and time in the long run.

To maintain your car battery, it is important to:

Keep it clean

A clean battery will last longer than a dirty one. Gunk and corrosion on the terminals can prevent electrical current from flowing freely, causing your battery to work harder than it needs to. This leads us to our next point.

Check the terminals regularly

In addition to keeping them clean, it is important to check the terminals for corrosion. If you see any white or blue buildup, use a brush made specifically for batteries (you can find them at auto parts stores) to remove it. It is also a good idea to tighten the terminals if they seem loose. Loose terminals can cause problems, including a loss of power and starting issues.

Keep an eye on the water level

Most batteries are maintenance-free, but if yours isn’t, you’ll need to check the water level every few months (more frequently in hot weather). Use distilled water to top off low levels; tap water can cause corrosion.

Don’t forget about charging!

When was the last time you checked your battery’s charge? A weak or dead battery is one of the most common reasons for car trouble, so it’s essential to keep an eye on it. You can use a voltmeter (you can find them at auto parts stores, too) to check your battery’s charge; 12.6 volts or higher means it’s fully charged, and 12 volts or lower means it needs to be charged.

By following these simple tips, you can help extend the life of your car battery-and avoid being stranded on the side of the road!

Keeping your car battery properly maintained is essential to avoiding costly repairs and breakdowns. Fortunately, with just a little bit of care and attention, you can prolong the life of your battery and keep your car running smoothly for years to come.
