What Are the Benefits of High-Mileage Motor Oil

The benefits of high-mileage motor oil include a cleaner engine and fewer chances of an oil leak. The best time to start using high-mileage motor oil is after the odometer has turned 75,000 miles. This motor oil type starts with a conventional base and includes additives. These additives are designed to remove the excess sludge that an older engine produces. The additives are also designed to help prevent the engine from springing an oil leak. This, too, is a common problem in older engines. Aside from high-mileage motor oil, there are three other oil types on the market. Here is what they are.

Conventional

Conventional motor oil is the most established oil on the market. It has been used for over 100 years and does an excellent job of protecting automobile engines. Conventional oil loses its viscosity after 3,000 miles, so this is why it is recommended to have this oil changed every 3,000 miles. Conventional oil is affordable and the most popular oil in the U.S. If you drive an automobile with a standard engine and do not live in an area with extreme weather conditions, you can use conventional motor oil.

Synthetic

Synthetic oil is relatively new and created in a lab. This motor oil works well in high-performance engines such as those found in sports cars. The oil also works well in extreme weather conditions. For example, it is not as prone to freeze in freezing temperatures. It is also not as prone to break down in extremely hot temperatures. Many people have jumped on the synthetic bandwagon because you don’t need to have the oil changed as often. In some cases, this balances out the higher price tag.

Blend

Finally, there is also a blend of synthetic and conventional oils available on the market. This provides additional protection over conventional oil but does not cost as much as synthetic oil. Many drivers choose the synthetic blend because they want the best of both oils. This blend provides that. The only thing to take into account is if you drive an automobile that requires full synthetic oil. If this is the case, a blend will not do a good enough job of protecting your high-performance engine.
