If you have jump-started your car’s battery only to have the battery dead the next time you try to start your automobile, the alternator is going bad. United Auto Care advises that the alternator keeps the battery charged. If the engine dies because the battery has discharged, you need to replace the alternator. It is not keeping the battery charged. Here are other signs you need a new alternator.
Dim/Overly Bright Lights
You may also notice strange things with your vehicle’s lights. They may be dim, they may flicker, or they may be overly bright. If the lights are dim and flickering, the alternator is not providing enough power to them for them to operate normally. If the lights are overly bright, the alternator is manufacturing too much voltage, which might seem strange that it is a sign that the alternator is dying.
Burning Wires or Rubber
If the dying alternator is producing too much voltage, you will smell burning wires and rubber coming from the engine. This is an indication that the electrical system is too hot. Consequently, the hot electrical wiring will melt the wiring insulation. Do not drive your automobile if you can smell hot wires or rubber. Driving the vehicle runs the risk of causing an electrical fire.
Accessory Malfunction
Aside from keeping the battery charged, the alternator also provides power to the accessories. Consequently, if the alternator is malfunctioning, the accessories will malfunction. For example, you may not be able to open or close your power windows or adjust your power seat.
Frequent Engine Stalls
The alternator also provides power to the spark plugs so they can fire in the order designated by the engine control module. If your engine has suddenly started to sputter and stall, it’s possible that the alternator is not powering the spark plugs correctly and they are misfiring.
Grinding Engine Noises
If you hear grinding noises coming from the engine, they could be coming from the alternator. This is an indication that it needs to be replaced because its parts have worn out. You may also have a problem with the alternator belt. If this is the case, it will squeal.
Dashboard Warning Light
Finally, your vehicle’s dashboard will let you know that the alternator is having a problem by illuminating a warning light. In this case, you will see a battery-shaped light, or the light will spell out the word ALT or GEN.
